Networking requirements

We recommend that for optimal performance you have at least 250 Kbit/s of bandwidth available downstream from the server (the conference centre) to the client (your PC), and at least 150 Kbit/s of bandwidth available upstream from the client to the server. These figures are per client. So if you have a number of PC’s on your network using JustMeet, you must multiply these figures by the number of PC’s using JustMeet.

Remember that a normal broadband PC connection has a lower upstream rate than downstream rate. So for a normal 8 Mbit/s broadband, the upstream is usually 448 Kbit/s for a home user or 892 Kbit/s for a business user. The figures may be lower in practice depending on your physical proximity to the telephone exchange and the effect of other broadband users in your local area. So in practice we would recommend that you do not simultaneously run more than 2 JustMeet sessions on your network if you have a single home broadband connection, and 5 for a single business connection.

Remember that your network connection is shared by all the programs running on your PC, and all the other PCs on your network. You may cause video and audio problems if you run JustMeet at the same time as other programs that have a heavy network usage. For example, some network based games and download programs might cause problems. Running a bit torrent client, even if it is not downloading, will cause problems because they also send data upstream.

If your PC is connected to your network by a wireless connection then performance may vary depending on the quality of the connection. This is affected by physical factors such as the location of the base station, the location of the PC, the quality of the connection, and the number of other wireless users. If you have problems using a wireless connection then we recommend that you temporarily connect your PC to your network using a cable in order to check whether the problem is the wireless connection or something else.

If you are not sure that your broadband connection meets the requirements, you can use an internet speed connection test site. Be sure to use a site that gives figures for both upload and download, such as www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ .

Communication between the client and the server can be affected by the presence of firewalls located between the client and the server. This is discussed in Firewall configuration.
